Seagulls of Sydney Art Project + Book Review
We are learning about Australia in our homeschool right now, and we found a fun book and simple art project all about the Seagulls of Sydney!
Hello Sydney!
We love to let the books we read from our Morning Basket take us on a journey! Today I want to share with you the fun and simple art project that we did, and that you can do, while you read this book with your kids.
Hello Sydney by Megan McKean was given to us from my brother who lives in Sydney as a gift for the kids so they could learn all about the city he lives and loves, and boy do they love it!

I did not know how many cool and amazing places Sydney had to see and it boosted mine and my 5-year-old's desire to travel there!
This book will take you and your kids on a fun journey through and around the city of Sydney, with beautiful and kid-friendly illustrations, from the narrative viewpoint of six cheeky seagulls. They ask you to find all six of them on each page, which is a great look-and-find adventure, that my kids find very entertaining.
Beginning your tour at the harbor where you see the bridge, the bay, the opera house and more we really felt like we were there.
The seagulls took us to other locations such as Hyde Park, the Tower Eye, Taronga Zoo, and Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, telling us tidbits of knowledge about each wonderful place.
We learned about the fish market, the yummy food of Chinatown, and the fun roller coasters at Luna Park!
The page about the art gallery of New South Wales was a fun one and is where I got the inspiration for our art project... 'maybe one day a great artist will paint the seagulls of Sydney.'

The Seagulls of Sydney Art Project for Kids
What you need:
- Download this free coloring page of a seagull, and print 6 per page.
- Markers
- scissors
- glue
- paper
- The book, Hello Sydney
What to do:
Print out the seagulls, and have your kids color each seagull however they see fit. You can suggest that each one be unique and different, which can lead to more backstories for each one. If your child has stories to tell about each gull, jot down those thoughts. My youngest who loves to count began counting his seagulls, in many ways. How many he had to color, how many he had already colored. This was math and art for him.
Once they have colored all their 6 seagulls, they can be done for this sitting.Each child may be inspired to do something different with their seagulls, so I would encourage you to allow that.
My 7-year-old son really wanted to cut out his seagulls.
He then created 6 unique landscapes for each of them to live in, based on their character traits he had invented while coloring them. His artwork was soon becoming a beautiful collection!
It was a joy to see, and it inspired me to go with his creativity because I always learn something from any lesson I put together.
Once he was done, he taped them up on the wall to admire his beautiful 'Seagulls of Sydney' Art Collection!
This was a really fun art project, that each of my children finished in different ways.
