Summertime Snacks for Kids: Homemade Ice Cream in a bag!

Making Homemade Ice cream is not as hard as you might think! Come to check out how you can do this at home with your kids...If you have been following us on Instagram you may have seen that we made homemade ice cream the other night, after my son saw it being made on YouTube, and that is could take 5 minutes. We gave it a try! It's a fun activity to do with kids, and makes a yummy summertime treat as well!

Homemade Ice Cream

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 cup of Whole milk
  • 2 cups of Whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup of White sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp of Pure Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cups of Rock salt or Course Salt
  • Lots of ice cubes
  • 2 ziplock bags, one large one medium sized

Method for making homemade ice cream with your kids:

In a measuring cup, pour your milk and cream, then add in your sugar and vanilla extract. I recommend going on your own taste for this. If you want less vanilla or less sugar, go for that. I tasted it and thought it was a good blend.Next, grab a bowl, and place your medium sized bag inside the bowl, and pour your milk/cream mixture into the stabilized bag, and seal tight, making sure you have no air inside.Place all your ice, (3 ice cube trays full) into your large bag, and pour in your salt.Making Homemade Ice CreamPlace your bag of cream inside, and mix it around so the ice surrounds your bag as much as you can. Top it off with some ice as well. Wrapping it with a towel is a good idea, and then you can really grab a hold of the towel, and shake, shake, shake!Shake your bag for about 5-10 minutes, if you can. Our ice was melting, so if you have more on hand, you can add more in, and drain your water a bit, if that happens. My son wanted to shake the bag, and had a great time doing that!Making Homemade Ice CreamYou can check the ice cream after a little bit to see how it is doing, how it is changing. This was really cool for my son, seeing how the movement and cold temperature were all playing a role to change the structure of the milk. It is a great hands-on science project, with the tastiest results!Making Homemade Ice Cream

Homemade Ice Cream Succes!

After shaking for about 10 minutes, our ice cream was coming together nicely, and it was so yummy!  Totally worth the effort and the kids loved it! So did I. It tasted really good, and he was very eager to taste it right away. I am so glad to finally do this activity because it was on my list for quite some time. Mr6 was very pleased, and happy to have worked hard to make it! What a great weekend activity. Thanks for reading today!
