We have been painting up a rainbow storm this weekend with rocks the kids gathered from the yard. They made it into a fun activity and worked together to gather the rocks for the project. I was hoping to create a beautiful counting set for the kids, to add some color to their math lessons.

This project will be a fun addition to what we use naturally to learn math in our homeschool, which we pair up with our Masterpiece Numbers 1 -30 Learning Pack, which also include’s our Coloring 100’s Chart, which you can find here.

Let’s get started!

Supplies Needed:

  1. 100 rocks

  2. white acrylic paint

  3. rainbow colored paints: red, yellow, pink, green, purple, orange (or peach) and blue, we also added black, white, and teal.

  4. mod podge

  5. paintbrushes + water containers

  6. damp rag

  7. wax paper or parchment paper (we started with newspaper, but it isn’t the best)

Method for painting your 100 Rainbow Rocks for your classroom:

3-4.jpg

Wash your rocks, so they are clean and dust free, then apply 2-3 coats of white paint to all of your rocks, and let dry.

4-6.jpg

Paint each set of 10 rocks, a different color, and let dry. 2-3 coats.

Paint 2-3 coats of mod podge to seal and protect each rock, and let dry completely. This can take 3-4 days for your rocks to stop being a little tacky to the touch, and each other, depending on your climate and humidity in your home. More coats of mod podge, the better as you will be storing your rocks together in either a bin, bowl, or basket when not in use.

Then, set up for your kids to count, play with, sort, and create for endless hours of fun! These rocks really go well with all sorts of set ups, including free play while you read a fun story, just like the one below:
