THE SHEEP OF IRELAND

While taking a drive in Ireland, you will not go long before you see a flock of sheep grazing peacefully into he country side. There are may breeds of sheep in Ireland, and the most common is the black faced mountain sheep, which are very hardy animals and can withstand the wind, rain and cold. They all have horns, both male and female. Around 35, 000 Irish farmers make a living by farming sheep. In the 18th and 19th century many land lords in Ireland brought sheep from England, and vary few are native to Ireland. Wicklow Cheviot Sheep is one of the oldest breeds brought to Ireland, from Wicklow Mountains to the South of Dublin. They are completely white, and have extreme hardiness, as they don't get sheep rot, and can birth their lambs by themselves. These characeristics evolved over many centuries.

Optional Religous Connections:

Read the Parable of the Lost Sheep, and disccuss the connections your children find naturally.

Luke 15:3-7

So He told them this parable, saying, "What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? "When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
"And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!' "I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
