The 5 Types of Irish Lace

1. Kenmare lace, a needle-point Irish lace based on the detached buttonhole stitch, also called needle-lace to distinguish it from canvas lace needlepoint. It was made by nuns with lined thread, but now it is made with cotton thread. Once the lace is completed, the threa holing down the outline is cut, and it releases the cloth backing.

2. Carrickmacross lace, was introduced to Ireland about 1820, and was taught to local women and became known and found sales in 1846 during the potato famine.

3. Youghal lace, which was developed in 1845 by reverse engineering some Italian Lace, to understand how it was made, then taught to local women and a school of lace began.

4. Limerick lace, is also known as Tambour Lace, and became known in 1830's and was made in a lace-making factory by an English businessmen.

5. Irish Crochet Lace was as developed in mid-nineteenth century as a method of imitating expensive Venetian point laces and was initially taught in convents throughout the country and used as part of Famine Relief Schemes and is characterized by separately crocheted motifs, which were later assembled into a mesh background.
