Additional Learning Resources for The Build Your Masterpiece Class | Adventures in Ireland: Adventure 3: Brigid’s Cross Craft
One of the many stories of Saint Brigid is the one about the time when she was called to the bedside of a dying chieftain. As she sat beside him she told him about Jesus and then began to weave a cross from the rushes that were on the floor.
This type of cross is known as a Solar Cross, and each of the four arms represent the four seasons.
Today, let's learn how to make our own Brigid's cross with pipe cleaners, as they are the easiest to make for the first time, and for young children. Straws also work well.
If you wish to continue to practice with other materials, that is fabulous! Find more details on how to do this art project below, and enjoy our inspired coloring page included in our curriculum here.
Traditionally, they are woven with rushes or reeds gathered from the Irish countryside and make them on the Eve of Imbolc, on January 31st, so they are made for February 1. You can learn how to as well, just as they have done for hundreds of years.
