Additional Learning Resources for The Build Your Masterpiece Class | Adventures in Ireland: Adventure 1: The Flags of Ireland
Ireland is an island off the coast of The United Kingdom of Great Britain which contains the other three British regions of the UK, which are; England, Scotland and Wales. The island of Ireland is now divided between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Can you see the line dividing the two in the map below? There is a rich and long history here, and is special because it has two flags. Let's learn about them!
The flag of the Republic of Ireland is the typical flag you may have seen before. It's colors are green, white and red. The green portion of the flag was designed to represent the majority of Catholic residents of the island, the orange side, the minority Protestant and the white middle part is for peace and harmony between them. This is very significant because for so many decades there have been wars over the land, the kings and queens who ruled over it, as well as the main religion.
Northern Ireland is now part of Great Britain and holds the British flag.
Optional activity:
On the Coloring Page of the Map of Ireland, draw in the line that divides the two nations.
