When I visited Paris in 1999, this was my favorite piece of art in the whole museum. It really does take your breath away. Notice the naturalism with the clothing, and the details in her wings, and the inspiring strength she portrays. - Alexandra

Now that we have learned more about the history of where Nice got it’s name, and the the city itself, let’s learn about the Artist Henri Matisse, who moved to the South of France and invented a new art style, which is one of my favorites.
Today we are reading a wonderful book called "Henri's Scissors" by Jeannette Winter. In this book, we will learn more about Henri Matisse and his beautiful works of art. He would create these with paint and, later on, paper and scissors. Because this artist created many interesting works, we are going to spotlight him all week!
"I love the use of his shapes and color, inspired by the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea." - Alexandra
The videos below have been watched, and chosen specifically for their lessons, about the history of the artist, but also his art that is most fascinating, and those that we also feature in our Adventures. Many of them have inspiration for you in terms of art projects as well as history on Matisse. I hope you enjoy!!
“Don't wait for inspiration.
It comes while one is working.”
- Henri Matisse
We have also included a spotlight on another type of art instalment that Henri Matisse created later in his life.
The Chapel of the Rosary is located on Henri Matisse Avenue, Vence, France, just an hour's drive from the city of Nice. Today, we are going to learn about the Chapel of the Rosary and the stained glass art which was a project that Matisse did at the end of his career.
