Chapter 11: Like Summer Tempests Came His Tears
Today we are reading Chapter 11 in the “Wind in the Willows” titled "Like Summer Tempests Came His Tears”. In this chapter, Toad arrives home from his escapades, to be scolded and told to right his ways. There are some changes he is to face, and during the luncheon, Toad finds out that something horrible has happened to his house, and they all band together to save the day!
Discussion Ideas:
Do you think that Mr. Toad will finally listen to Rat? Was Toad really ready to behave himself? Who had taken over Toad’s house? Would you be upset if you learned while you were away, someone came into your house and started living in it, as if taking it from you?
Art Project: English House Art Appreciation
The type of home that Toad lived in was built a very long time ago, so today I wanted to share with you about a type of home design in the 1800’s called the Arts and Crafts Movement. It was a way in which to decorate a home with care and joy and was developed by British Interior Designer William Morris. This spread across Europe and into North America. See the art appreciation included to get a better idea of this. Nature and craftsmanship was a huge inspiration for it. He said: "Have nothing in your house you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Let's gain inspiration from the past and the style in England during the 1800's while appreciating our homes and decorate them with inspiration from the past. Is there something in your home or bedroom that you might like to change, or improve? Be inspired by this chapter and create something for your home that is useful, and, or beautiful. Optionally, you could create your own house art by drawing your own home, and adding color to it, inspired by nature or creating houses out of cardboard, clay, or other materials.
